ABERCRAVE AIRMAN REPORTED MISSING
Our Abercrave correspondent reports that Sergeant Observer Gerwyn Evans, RAF, the 20 years old son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Evans of Derwendeg, Penycae, has recently been reported missing. Well known throughout the valley as a very promising lad, Sergeant Evans joined the RAF in 1941 and proceeded to London for training. In January 1942, he sailed for South Africa and after a further six months training he gained his wings. He later returned to this country. He was a very promising footballer and was chosen to play with the RAF Morris Works team and as a result of his brilliant performance in the Oxford Charity Cup match, he was awarded the medal, a unique honour for so young a player.
Educated at Maesydderwen he gained his school certificate and prior to joining the RAF he was on the staff of the Breconshire County Council Medical department. Sergeant Evans was married at Christmas 1942 to Miss Amy M. Thomas of Lower Chapel, Brecon. The numerous friends of the family will join in expressing the deep regret with which the news is received and in extending to his wife, parents and brother the hope that news of his safety will yet be received.
