Tom Jones

Tom Jones was born in Ystradgynlais and served with the South Wales Borderers on the Western Front, being killed in action at Ypres in 1917. He was killed at the offensive on Pilckem Ridge aged 25 years of age.

Additional InformationThomas was the son of Lewis John Jones and Mary Ann Jones, of Glantawe Row, Ystradgynlais, and was born in Ystradgynlais in 1892. He worked as a hewer and married Grace Hughes (born Holydead 1890) in 1910 and the couple lived next to Thomas's parents. Thomas enlisted at Ystradgynlais into the 11th Battalion, South Wales Borderers.

News has been received that Sergeant Tom Jones of the 11th S. W. B. formerly of Glantawe, was killed in an attack in France on 31st July. He joined up two years ago and had been in France for 22 months. His Adjutant Captain W. T. Harries had written a letter of sympathy to the wife in her sad bereavement. There are also a number of children left to mourn the loss of their father.
